A sea of yellow will be created for United's season-defining fixture - with victory capping off a successful campaign for the U's.

County leaders said the club's success will create a "buzz" around their football team and instil pride.

Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said it would boost morale, with his opposite number on the county council, Ian Hudspeth, adding it would inspire more youngsters to want to play for United.

County council leader Mr Hudspeth who is a die-hard U's fan said: "It will be fantastic for the city and the county because it should there is so much support for Oxford United.

"Youngsters around Oxfordshire will look at the club and say they want to play for them. It would be great to get more homegrown players.

"It will have a real positive impact on the city."

Mr Price added: "The work the club's community trust has been doing will receive a boost and more people will have a greater affinity to the club."

Joe Nicholls of the Yellow Army supporters group said promotion would be the "icing on the cake" to cap off a good season.

Former Oxford United prankster Terry Gordon said it would be "marvellous" to see the club get promoted.

He added it would also create an atmosphere across the city, similar to the feeling of Leicester City fans after they won the Premier League.

The 70-year-old is currently recovering at his Northway home after suffering a heart attack three weeks ago, but remains in high spirits and plans on listening to the Wycombe game on the radio.

Mr Gordon, a former window cleaner, whose pranks have foxed George Best, Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne, said: "It will do wonders for the club to get promoted.

"The following this season has been great and it was good to see how many fans went away to Carlisle.

"The fans will be nervous, it's the same as 1996 so hopefully it will be the same outcome as 20 years ago.

"The key is if we get promoted to hold onto our players like Kemar Roofe, so hopefully we will keep the boys and be successful next year."

Mr Gordon recalled the memorable game in 1996 when Denis Smith's team sealed promotion with a 4-0 win over Peterborough.

Thousands of U's supporters are to attend a sun-soaked, pre-match barbecue on Saturday with all proceeds to go directly to the club.
