CALLING all gardeners- this pumpkin grower is looking for some competition.

William Walker has been growing his prized fruits for the last five months and has set himself the challenge of trying to get into the Guinness World Records.

The Weston-on-the-Green resident spends hours each day tending to his plants, including watering the plant with up to 20 gallons in the morning and again in the evening.

The pumpkins are currently about the size of a large grapefruit, but despite it being Mr Walker's first successful attempt at growing the fruit he is still going for the record.

Mr Walker, who grow the plants with his friend Jane, said: "We're just eccentric nutcases really. I've been growing here for seven years but we've never really had any success with pumpkins.

"I'm now having to decide whether to stop the pumpkins growing or check the records book and go from there.

"I really want to see it through to the end, and if anyone else thinks they can beat my size they should get in touch."

Despite using some unusual compost ingredients such as coffee beans, Mr Walker has a long way to go to beat the world record for the heaviest pumpkin.

It currently stands at 1,054 kg and was grown by Beni Meier from Switzerland.
