Wantage Town are looking for a new boss after Gary Acking resigned as manager of the the Southern League side.

Ackling, 53, said he had made up his mind to go before Saturday’s game at Tiverton.

It followed the shock resignation of the Division 1 South & West’s chairman Tony Woodward on Friday.

“It’s disappointing, but I didn’t really have any choice,” said Ackling, who was in his second spell at Alfredian Park.

“The chairman got us here and gave us the blueprint for the club which was to get promoted from the Hellenic League and then stabilise in the Southern League.

“No-one has any idea why he went. Myself and Andy Lyne (assistant boss) went to see him two weeks ago which was really positive.

“There was no big fall-out, so it was rather strange. It shook us up a bit.”

Acking added: “I felt I did a good job. I did the first part and was on course to do the second.

“I looked at it long and hard and feel I made the right decision.

“There is no animosity from me. It’s very frustrating because we started the job, but weren’t able to finish what we started.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Wantage went down to defeat at Tiverton Town where a missed penalty from Tom Melledew proved crucial.

The hosts took the lead ten minutes before the break when Jamie Mudge thumped home a volley from the edge of the box.

Right on half-time, Sam Barder saw his shot fumbled by the Tiverton keeper Chris Wright, but the ball trickled just wide.

Wantage should have levelled after the break when Jimmy Deabill was pushed in the penalty area.

Although skipper Melledew sent Wright the wrong way, his effort hit a post.

And Wantage were made to pay when Owen Howe tapped in the winner for Tiverton from a Mudge cross.

Deabill almost pull one back, but the hosts held on.

Wantage Tn: Tucker, Sadler, Barder, Steedman, Brown, Melledew, (Roberts 75) Xapi, Johns, Deabill, Lachcaz, Pearce (Shaw HT). Subs not used: Farrow, Catt.
