Oxfordshire trio Alice Hopkins, Sam Way and Tim Stephens have qualified for September’s English Schools National finals in Birmingham.

It followed their success at the English Schools’ regional combined events at Nuneaton.

Hopkins, from Lord Williams’s, Thame, Way (Radley College) and Magdalen’s Stephens finished second in the under 17 women, under 17 men and under 20 men events respectively.

Hopkins got off to a flier by winning the 80m hurdles in 11.7 seconds.

However, Oxford City’s Jade O’Dowda hurt a hip finishing second in 12.0, ruling her out for the rest of the weekend.

Hopkins (1.57m) finished third in the high jump, a place ahead of Banbury’s Rebecca Scott (1.54).

The shot was won by Hopkins in a personal best of 11.39.

Hopkins then pulled out a 23.71 throw in the javelin to finish second overall with 4,404 points.

Scott finished sixth and has to wait to see if she qualifies as one of the UK top eight not in a team.

Way triumphed in the long jump with 5.96, before winning the discus with a personal best of 39.26.

He also set a new mark when he won the discus with a best of 43.31 and clocked 56.0 in the 400m.

However, his 5.16.4 time in the 1500m was not enough to win the event.

Stephens started the meet in the 100m where he clocked a personal best of 11.5.

He did the same in the long jump (6.17) and shot (9.78), before recording a throw of 1.69 in the high jump.

Stephens then went on to record another best in the 400m of 51.0, and in the 110m hurdles (15.6), discus (22.69), pole vault (3.10) and javelin (28.65).

He was only two seconds outside his personal best in the 1500m (4.27.8) as his total points score of 5,592 took him to tenth in the UK under 20 rankings.

In the junior girls, Petrina Chantler Edmond won the shot with a throw of 11.05.
