OXFORD City Stars were edged out 2-1 in a cagey clash with high-flying Wightlink Raiders at Oxpens in English National League South Division 1.

Joe Edwards struck a 57th minute equaliser, but within a minute the visitors regained the slender lead they had held for most of the match to claim the two points on Sunday.

Stars’ home form has been excellent in recent weeks and they went into the clash with Wightlink looking for a fifth straight success.

Unlike their visitors, Stars had not played on the Saturday night, but they did not look as sharp as in previous outings.

Wightlink struck the opening blow in the seventh minute, when Ryan Webb fired home.

The score stayed 1-0 until the third period, when Stars began to find their best form.

It bore fruit on 56mins 36secs, when Edwards scored after good work from Dax Hedges and Joshua Florey.

But the joy was shortlived, as 54 seconds later Webb struck again to seal the points.

Stars face a double-header against clubs from the capital this weekend.

They visit London Raiders on Saturday, before hosting Streatham Redskins a day later.
