SCOTT Davies is confident Oxford City can put together a run to push them up the Vanarama National League South table, starting tomorrow away to Chelmsford City.

Two late goals at home to Concord Rangers last weekend ended a poor run of three straight defeats in a 2-2 draw.

And City’s captain believes it could be the trigger for an upturn in fortunes.

“It was great to get those two goals in the last five minutes,” said Davies.

“It’s a shame we didn’t get them earlier, because I think we would have gone on and won the game.

“But we got a point and it’s important that we build on that.

“If we can go six or seven games unbeaten now we’ll shoot right up the table, quickly and quietly.

“You always get teams who maybe fly under the radar and, after the start we’ve had, I think that could be us.

“I’m quietly confident in a few weeks time we will be looking down on most of the sides in this league.”

Key to any improvement in City’s form will be cutting out the defensive mistakes which have seen them concede nine times in the last four matches.

City’s generosity at the back has been a source of frustration for the former Oxford United man.

Davies said: “We’re masters of our own downfall at times.

“None of the goals we’ve conceded are ones where you have to step back and applaud the quality of it – all of them have been avoidable.

“We’re like Father Christmas at times, the way we’ve been giving goals away.”

With just four players retained from last season, City’s new-look squad have taken their time to settle.

But Davies has seen signs of improvement of late which he believes bodes well for the remainder of the campaign.

“We’ve got a lot of new faces here and it’s taken us a little time to get used to each other,” he said.

“In training, we’ve found another level this week.

“I think that’ll be reflected in our results.

“With the squad we’ve got here compared to the rest of the division, there’s no doubt we should be challenging.

“I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think we could compete at the top.”
